The Litter Box

The whole named "The Litter Box" was jokingly named as you putted the ball through the mouth of a cat, through it's cheese like body, through a whole at it's end (the butt) and into a litter box. This project was very frustrating to build but after it was done and everyone played it was a lot fun! Sadly I didn't have a good camera to really get some good pictures of it. But I really enjoyed our mechanical object, as simple as it was it added a good amount of challenge since if you did not put the ball just right you always would get stuck and land over par. This whole as simple looking as it was had a real challenge in it.

I found this project to be extremely frustrating. With the limitations I had, it began to seem nearly impossible to get material that would work in such a large scale. But as I came across the wooden dowels, I had planned on covering them after building the shape, but after it was built I really enjoyed the lines and patterns created by the dowels.

Systems taught me to consider as many factors as possible before I started work on a project. After my failed first attempt at the topographic map (involving 4,500 tiny beads), I realised I had to start off thinking about the materials, the proportions, the process, and putting them all together. Retrospectively applying those types of considerations to other projects, I began to notice that any physically creative endeavour is a system of factors:

- materials (availability of them? workability of them? strategy for them?)
- strategy (intelligence of it? practicality of it? presentation of it?)
- presentation (intent behind it? effectiveness of it? materials for it?)

...and the system creates a cycle
...and from this cycle comes efficiency, which accelerates the effectiveness of the intended idea

...which is art.

I say, Foundations-- did you really teach me something that goes beyond Foundations?

My group's end product was not what was originally planned. We were going to have ramps and tunnels that the golf ball would go through leading it to the different decade courses. We were also going to have it so tat the spinning wheel was laying horizontal and the ball would spin on that shooting it off into a different tube. This didn't work so at last minute we got rid of all that and ended up with our finished project. We worked really hard but personally, I think it could have and should have been better. I did like our theme of decades and dressing up was fun but I think our course could have been stronger.

Our first plan was using water to slide a toy car. But the plan did not work, so we changed to plan B which is not to use neither the toy nor water.
It was a lot of work but it was fun when it came down to the actual event.

This is our mini Golf Corse. We named it Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. This hole was a par 18 because there was alot of ramps and obsticales that the ball had to be hit around. One of the chanllenging this about making this hole was that the hot glue would make the plastic bottles bend and not lay flatt like we wanted them to so we had to find ways around that. Over all though I think are hole was fun and not to chanlenging for people.

For this project, the most challenging part was undoubtedly the motorized octopus. While most of the other features of our golf course went smoothly, we hit this snag time and again. The biggest problem that none of us considered was the heat the motor produced. It was enough to melt the glue that held our umbrella in place and make it wobble after a very short time. Still, it was a fun project to plan and execute.

We used a verity of natural building materials for our bridge they include, logs, wood, stones, bamboo shoots, pine needles, and bark. Then for the materials we used for supports included vines and then bark strips that we got from making charcoal in Drawing class. We also made a stone walk way on either end of our bridge.

This was a group assignment and our group was made up of Emi Kikuchi, Nicola Noletti and Nabal Camacho. When the assignment was given to us we had great plans to meet the assignment’s guidelines. The original plan called for a swinging platform that takes a person to one bank to the other. Since we had no plan of attack for raising the 15’ trees that we had obtained, we had to change our plans and use the heavy lumber to make a bridge with stone tiles to guide the user. The swirls on the bridge sever as a marker for anyone crossing to step on. The swirls indicate which stones were level and secured on the to bridge. The handle is there for the safety of the user to prevent any wet spills.

Evan, Danielle, and I created this bridge using stick, rocks, mud, ect. It was sturdy over all and we were obviously able to cross it no problem. The idea was to imitate a normal path in the woods; as if the bridge was just camoflauged in. It went over pretty well surprisingly.

For our project, we came up with a 10foot bridge made out of logs(wood), mud(dirt/water), and stone(rocks). At first we were going to weave branches into the wood so it would hold up. Unfortunately the branches were not bending the way we wanted them to bend, so we decided to start pile rocks on top and cement them in with mud, which we made out of dirt and a little of water to make it a sticky form so the rocks would stay in place. We were really happy with the end product and relieved it didn't rain to mess up the bridge. It held all three of us, so it was a great excess!!

Our bridge is made up of stone wooden logs and vines. All found in and around alfred. Our idea for this project didnt really hit us until we found our spot to build. Seeing as the stretch of the creek was so far we decided to build three support pillars. We didnt really have a plan after that we kind of figured things out as we went. The thing I found most amazing was that as we built the bridge for function we add the visual part as we built, which I thought was cool because I figured we would have to do that after we got it to hold us. I think we all liked the fact that our bridge resembled a stone bridge made with cement and stone.

In my group was me (Katie Cappadonia), Kate Shied and Jack Yu for the all natural bridge project over the Kanakadea River behind Harder Hall and in-between that and Main Street. Our bridge is composed of branches of strong wood, rocks holding it up. We found vines that were like rope so we weaved that in to hold the branches together and to stabilize it more. We also soaked tiny strips of bark from a tree we used to make charcoal for Ted's drawing class, and used those as nice string to tie the branches together throughout the length of the bridge. After it was secure enough, we topped it with layers of tree bark, and then put pine needles over it. For artistic elements, we included logs that we got holes put into and made it like a fence, lining the side of the bridge. We also found dead bamboo shoots behind Cohen and threaded it through the holes in the logs. Then we wrapped a green vine like rope around it. We also adorned it with pine-cones and I sprinkled the red flower parts from a Sumack tree over the pine needles. We also started the beginning and end of it with a nice rock stepping stone walkway.

I found this to be the most challenging project to date. All of the elements to be considered were more than I am used to. That aside, I am really happy with how our bridge turned out. I don't know about the other members of my group, but my favorite feature of this bridge is the fact that it is still alive. The frame is primarily grape vines, and for extra strength we allowed most of the vines to remain rooted to the bank. I love the idea that this bridge will put off leaves and grow in time, becoming stronger instead of rotting away.

It reminds me of one of my neighbor's grape arbor back home. Really it is the back room of his house because the grapes have grown over a huge frame about the size of my dorm room. In fall the grapes hang from the walls and ceiling and smell wonderful.

This bridge also reminds me of something out of a fantasy story. I love The Lord Of the Rings, so I think of hobbits when I look at our bridge. But that's just me.

There are three rock supports to this bridge, and the rest is woven out of grape vines and sticks. I would trust the vine base to outlast a tsunami. When the waters receded, most of this bridge would still be in tact.

Also, one of the highlights of building this bridge was the really cool salamander that I found. I took his picture and put him back under his rock.

Steph's Topography Map

This project, I wasnt sure entirely what material to go about making a topographical representation. After some thought, I made the decision to work with wax and heat. I made a base for the 'map' using tupper ware the size of my topographic map guide to fill partially with molten paraffin wax. Once that was cooled, very carefully I built up layers to make up the mountains of the Adirondacks. Unfortunately just before critique, I dropped the final piece, shattering the top layers of mountainous terrain. This would explain the fractures to any edges in the pictures. I regret I hadn't documented before this accident, but I'm still satisfied with the end product despite it's imperfections.

We were asked to print or find topographic maps and create a sculpture based on it's properties. With mine i thought of the general form, created it with a general form in mind. With the mountains swirl like designs i created images that resembled what i seen; as if it were ink blots or clouds, and invisioned what i thought they could be.

I chose to use oatmeal as my medium to visually describe Death Valley in California. I thought that it still being wet would offer an interesting contrast to it's dry appearance, and also to the dry and hard climate in the area. It was really difficult to get the oatmeal to do what I wanted, and it has been settling and sinking.

As you can see i used a stump. Was this easy? nope not at all, but it was fun because i got to choose how i wanted to do it and i chose to carve it into a stump. The trick to this is to chisel without breaking the wood seeing as the wood is still alive and drying even now. i kept the stair case effect because with it you know what your looking at, without it you wouldnt know. as for the spot in the middle i couldnt do much with that seeing as you have to deal with the cards your dealt. overall i enjoyed this project and look forward to our bridges.

It took looooong time to complete this sclpture. I was sick of foundation and make the things perfect. I was supposed to make the perfect topographocal map though, I wanted to play with the map and pspers. So at first, i recreated the map more styalized. I love polka dots so I painted on the sclpture.

This assignment was a tough one for me. We had to recreate a Topography map in 3-D and we had the limitation of not stacking materials horizontally. So I tought of a clever method for building a landscape by tking cross section of the map. I drew a line from on end of the map to the other and marked down what elevation the line crossed. By using a graph one can see the mountian profile by using elavation on the Y -axis and distance on the x- axis. I build the map using a series of these slices and hale them together with two small wooden dowles.

The project posted here is not my original project. The first one I did was accidentally thrown away. I originally constructed it out of cardboard and cut up bits of cork, however the one shown here is made from clay I had left over. The map is of mount Fuji in Japan. Originally I had the 3D map built as a large 10 inch scale, however, now due to limited time and materials the scale for this is 2-3 inches.

My topographic is in the California Mountains. I defiantly struggle with this project. When we were first given this assignment I had a great idea and what materials use but when our professors told us we couldn't stack vertically I then didn't know what to do. For this project I used a craft foam. I had a lot of fun doing this project, but at times frustrated with making the portions right and having the highest point of the map. Overall i thought it came out well. The only thing I would change would probably made it a lot bigger instead of 6 by 6 which was the size of my topographical map.

My map was of a section of the area around the Des Moines River. I used foam-core, yarn, mod podge, and marker. This project was difficult because when I first heard that our next assignment was a topo map I thought of stacking but it turned out that we couldn't do that so I had to think of a material that I could show elevation. After thinking about it I decided to use yarn because I had a lot and it worked with the idea that I had. I decided to hang it from the ceiling because looking up at the different lengths of yarn added a sense of curiosity to what was going on. When set on a table looking down at it, it's very obvious to what is going on and what the yarn is representing.

This project was a struggle for me really didnt understand the math inovled at first for proportions sake. Then When I figured out it had to be 1" high (with a 16x16 in square), my first idea was not possible all that much. So i settled with my 2nd idea and that was to use dry clay. I had to mash it up in to a consistency so they were all around the same size. I still didnt know how it would turn out. When i got starting with the working with matterials part it was a bit more less stress. and I finally had something i didnt think was possible. throughout the "building" part of the process I found it hard to stay within the 1" hight, though in the end i did.

This project was challenging for my in terms of trying to decide how to build it. At first I wanted to make a pillow of sorts out of different colors of fabric, but sewing has never been my strong point and I was struggling. Then I thought of cutting swab sticks to form it, but I didn't like the way that was turning out either. Finally I decided to revert back to a material that I had experience with, which is wire. I took inspiration from Malibu's nail brush enlargement from last week, which I really liked. I used 28 gauge purple wire and a discarded cooling tray. Then I made graphs of my map, charting the rise and the run so to speak.

One fun thing that came out of making the elevation was that it felt almost like weaving at one point because I used very long pieces of wire.

Then, to display my piece, I chose the spot in the studio with the most white, which is above the white square on the floor and I suspended my project with thread from the ceiling. I really wanted people to feel able to walk around my project and inspect it from all angles, above, below, and from the sides, and I hung it from black thread instead of fishing line because I was afraid of clothes-lining someone and at the same time wreaking my project. I chose purple wire because I wanted to mimic the hazy quality mountains get. I think that it turned out well, and especially like the side view.

My plan for this project was to poke nails through carboard or faom and manipulate them so they were at different levels representing the elevations of the mountain. When I first started, I decided I wanted to make my map two times bigger than the traced off map. When I was done with that, I drew out and color coded the lines so I could know what lines had to be at what elevation. After I was done with that, I began to poke the nails through. As I kept going, I found many problems with my idea. I couldn't place the nails right next to each other as i wanted because it would make the cardboard not stable, and the nail heads on the bottom blocked them from sitting right next to each other. I used hot glue to make the nails stay in place. I used different size and different kind of nails which I believe makes it look cool. The highest elevation on the map was 3119 ft and the lowest was 2300 ft, which on my map made the highest point 3.1 inches and the lowest point 2.3 inches. My idea was cooler and better looking in my head. I don't completely hate my project but I think i could have done better if either i made my map bigger or if I did a different idea.

For this assignment, each student must translate a 4"x4" segment of a topographical map. The material, size and presentation are up to the discretion of the student. The only restriction for the assignment is that the final object can not be composed of vertically stacked sheet materials.
The assignment is due Monday, April 5th at 8am. Objects should be finished and displayed in their intended manner. The studio should be clean and free of all building materials.

For this project we were to blow up our original objects twenty times it's size. I kept the object bare in the back to show the original form of the cardboard, and by adding the small amount of foil i found i was able to make the object a little more interesting by showing the metallic property of the original object.

This assignment was a tough one. How was I supposed to make an epoxy syringe 9 feet tall and be successful? I decided to use primarily cardboard, tape and plastic sheeting, because I felt that transparent plastic would best convey this idea of "epoxy". I chose to leave hanging twine and visible cardboard, because when you are pushing the epoxy out of the tube, you can see the plunger. I also decided to use gravity as a factor, and I hung it from the ceiling. My critique went terribly, but I am confident that my piece conveys what I wanted it to. Gravity. Epoxy. It is a representational piece, and I feel that it properly shows what I wanted it to.

Steph Boyle's Project 3 (20x)

In this project I had to recreate a 20x enlargement of two connected plastic blocks. I found peices of cardboard, fabric, and paint to construct this using duct tape as my only adhesive. I first created two boxes for the bulk of the piece. To ensure that they wouldn't collapse, I added braces inside each out of cardboard. Next, I measured out cardboard strips for the ridges that are prevalent on the edges of the original plastic blocks. After, I applied twisted fabric to the border of the tops of the boxes. Lastly I covered the sides and tops of the piece, then painted the ridges that were left the brown of the cardboard they were made of.

As for the presentation of the piece, I chose to construct around one of the pilars in the room so as to mark my space in the studio in a more concrete way. I felt that I should have painted the pilar white as it had alot of graffiti on it. Although looking back, there's something about the pilar's state that I enjoy, in that our generation's candid thoughts and creativity is piercing through something as pure and clear as glass. I feel that it's an interesting oxymoron so to speak...but then again, to everyone's interpretation be their own.

When thinking of what material I would like to use for the 20x I decided to start to chip away at

the pile of metal hangers that i have acquired over the last couple of years. I started with the central rectangle cutting and joining the wires together. Next I started working on the handles of the brush. This part of the project was the hardest for me to figure out. It seemed like every time I tried to improve the "posture" of the handles they would just slouch back to their former position. So I moved on to the Bristles. My frith thought was to make bunches of wires to represent the bristles and have sharp ends but... that would have been too much cutting for my already tired hands. I then decided to make cylinders to represent the group of bristles instead of the individual bristles. By this time I had no strength left in my hands in order to improve the handles.

I decided to construct this project out of wood because my original project was very solid and heavy. I have never worked with wood working tools, so I was very apprehensive to go into woodshop. Eric was very helpful with telling me what tools would work best for what I wanted to do. I told him I wanted to stack the wood to make it heavy, but after talking with him about it, he convinced me that it would be much more efficient to construct a frame and then cut wood to fit the frame. That's what I did. Then I cut a whole through the center.

I feel like the execution of this project was successful, especially considering that I have never worked with wood cutting tools prior to this.

Now as you can see i have a shovel. overall i have to say that this assignment was very rewarding in the sense that i had fun with it because I enjoy sculpting out of any material I am given or in this case found. My shovel is constructed mostly of cardboard as the general percentage. In the spade I slipped in two rods of metal that i could bend so that the spade would always maintain its shape. The staff pf my shovel is two pieces and uses paper and the handle bars from the bike we destroyed, these gave the staff support. to connect the spade to the staff i used the spokes from the bike wheel and used them like nails in order to connect the two. Finally I used paper tape to recreate the wood texture for the staff and the spade. now my pictures are are dark for a reason i captured the natural light of outside at night. it almost gives it a graveyard effect to the shovel which i think is very fitting. It is also in a construction site which makes more sense as to why a shovel is there.

At first, when i started this project i thought that it was going to be an impossible task being that i had had a hard time replicating the object in a smaller form. As it turned out, things paned out better then expected. This peace is entirely made out of garbage, with the exception of hot glue to hold it together. I found all of the materials in three places; re-po, miller dumpster and a dumpster in town ware the old liquor store was. Used in the peace are; 2 tire innards, 4 trash can tops, electrical wire, an old table stand, plastic bags, paper, 5 gallon bucket tin foil, an old ash try like thing, some gardening plastic and chicken wire. The peace is made in parts so if you'd like you can look inside to see how all the garbage was put together. I presented it standing up, because i thought that was the best way for the viewe to experience the peace.

I have never been so frustrated as I was with any other project then this one. Initially writing out the dimensions I realized this was going to be difficult. The final measurement came out to 6'7" x 3'3" x 3'3", so this was going to be gigantic cinderblock. My first idea was to make a cardboard structure of the cinderblock out of cardboard, wrap it in chicken wire, then paper mache it with paper towels. When I first started most of my time was spent on the cardboard structure. I over-estimated how strong the cardboard I used was. It was constantly falling in on itself, and when i got one side to finally stand on its own the other would fall. After I finished it i started putting the paper towels. However, the paper mache glue was too watery and it cause the cardboard to get mushy and sag down. So to fix that I pointed my hair dryer at the wet spots and then took off the rest of the wet paper towels. I then stabilized the structure and placed it standing up on its end. I then decided to wrap the thing entirely in toilet paper. I again made it harder on myself because wrapping the toilet paper was so frustrating because it would keep breaking. After it was all covered I was given an idea of texture and decided to use the glue I made and add ink to it, then I would splatter it against the object. I added as many layer as I could, I wish I was able to do more to cover some more of the white. In the end it think it came out really well.

Oh my gosh-- this is the most dedicated I have ever been in Foundations. I treated this 20x assignment as if I were intricately underglazing the inside of a ceramic bowl or writing an essay on a topic I believed in. The process I went through to magnify the caster even paralleled that of my more quality prose: I began with an impulsive and jejune response, then spent sufficient time testing it out to realise it couldn't go very far-- so I edited my solution to maximise effectiveness and efficiency (and enjoyability-- might as well). My magnified caster was originally going to be built around a paper wheel, but layering foam around the wheel was completely non-functional. After I altered my plan to include a more reasonable use of foam (tracing, cutting, stacking, rasping), I figured I'd finish the caster by upholstering it in a thin, foam-type cloth. Soon after wrapping a component, however, I realised this was the most ridiculous idea ever in existence (pertaining to casters), and I immediately turned to the world of insta-colour aerosol.

…so, in short, even if my project seems haphazardly held together by a coat of spray paint, know that a lot of consideration, effort, and determination (…and health-- SO MANY FUMES) went into it. I loved this 20x caster like my own [independently initiated artwork].

Oh, and spray paint and I are now sworn enemies.

What and how I created it.

The Curling Iron was a very interesting and challenging object to make out of found materials. I got really

lucky when I found two cardboard cylinders in repo on the first day of the project. Yet even with the two

cylinders I had to make the bends and curves in the handle of the object. I came up with this amazing idea at

the time and that was to use plastic bottles to get more mass on the piece, yet when I started to assemble it

the curling Iron wasn't turning out the way I hoped. Which was to leave it uncovered, I just didn't like the

fact that it looked like trash. So I then thought I would be able to cover it with paper and be perfectly fine but

when I got done with covering it with paper I realized that yes it looked better but I have time and I have

Red duck tape in my room and I know my friend has silver so maybe I can cover the paper. When I started

covering the paper I was really hoping it would pull the paper in towards the cylinder so that way more of

the shape would be seen. I finally got down with the duck taping and I still had time to add some more

details. So I added as much of the details that i could measure from my perfect object on to the sculpture.

What I thought of my piece.

When I started this project I really didn't like it at all but as the process went on I started to enjoy it more

and more. This made me want to go to the studio more, so I did. At the end of it all I was really pleased with

what I had created and was excited for critique on Monday.

For this assignment I really didn't know what to do considering that one of my limitations was that I could not buy material. the only thing I could buy was bonding materials. This was difficult because the project that I had to create was one that was dependent on the luck of the draw on what things where availible to me... I found plastics that have the similar properties to the bulb that I had. the construction of the bulb was relatively easy because of the hanging method I used for the structually unsound materials.

My object was a shoe. I had a hard time at first figuring out what material I was going to use. I thought about cardboard or foam but I didn't know where I would find that much foam and I thought the cardboard would be difficult to shape the shoe. I finally decided on using bottle for many reasons. One, they are easy found objects, two, the shape of the bottles would make the shoe look round, and three, the bottles are easy to manipulate and stack on eachother.

When I started to construct the shoe, I made the first layer of bottle linked inside eachother so the structure would be more stable. For the laces, I made them out of the labels I took off the bottles. I took off all the labels because i didn't want the variety of drink labels to take away from the shoe. If I thought about this idea sooner, I would have saved all the labels and somehow made the laces look more round because right now I feel like they lay completely flat on the shoe and people could be unsure as to what it's supposed to be.

For the presentation of the project, I was unsure of where to put the shoe. I could have placed it on the ground but I thought that it would have been too low. I left it on the table because that is where I built the object. Also, the table is not clean, it has paint and glue on it but I felt it represented a street because the road is never clean.

Looking at my project, I could have payed attention to detail a little more but I feel I achieved the objective of "representing" the object. I was surprised how strong the structure was with only using bottles and hot glue. Overall, I'm happy with the way my shoe turned out.

For some reason it won't let me upload my pictures. So I am going to write about this project and try again later to upload.

Overall, I thought my project was a success. I did like how it turned out except wish I made the bottle more rounded around the corners. Also presenting my object I wish i laid it down to show people what the top looked like. But having set on the sink with the soap coming out (white yawn) to sure more depth thought it was a good idea.
I used two main materials, yawn and foam. Wrapping the yawn around the foam took a while and made me dizzy at times but thought it was a successful part of my piece. The bottle became close to 5ft (length) by 3ft (width). I had fun with this project and knowing if I did this in one day i wouldn't have gone far with the project. There are still some areas that I wished I worked on more but had a lot of fun doing this.

Blogger did not want to cooperate today, so I was only able to upload one image. Still, if I had to choose, this would be my first choice. For both the perfect object and this project I focused more on the frontal view of it, with less time or detail put on the sides. It is meant to be viewed straight on as one would look at the actual thing, with the most prominent feature being the switch its self.
I like how my project turned out, and I also like that it lights up. But I feel that I should have figured out how to make the switch flip, as that is what everyone who commented on it said. They wanted to flip the switch.
I chose the green wall on purpose, hoping to accentuate the white and silver of the object its self. While I did not paint the backdrop myself, I think it worked out well.

This is my 20X enlarged sculpture, in which my project was a restaurant-style napkin holder. It is 5 feet long and stands 32 inches tall. It consists of lots of cardboard, and internal reinforcements (cardboard), aluminum foil acting as the metal, tar paper (acting as the black strip), tuna cans as the buttons on the top, and circular chunks of wood as the feet for it. I took a large piece of roll paper and inserted it inside to represent a napkin, helping it look like an actual functional piece, only 20 times larger.

We were asked to go fetch an object one day in class, and i had managed to find something similar to a hose nozzle. Then we were asked to perfectly recreate this object out of plastocine clay. awesome. so i worked and worked, but continually failed. In the end i had recreated the thing 3 times without actually getting anywhere near perfection. Being that i'm not a 3-D artist, i think i did fairly well in the object's replication. Overall it was frustrating, but enjoyable in it's own way.

Bicycle Assignment

For this assignment the class was given a bike to work on for a 2 hour session. I was the first to alter the bike. My original idea consisted of wrapping the bike in the notes that I've had throughout the past semester; which is what i ended up doing, but i wanted to take it further by grafiting it with a Ferris wheel silhouette and then video taping me cranking it. Unfortunately the wrapping took longer than expected and i was just left with it's wrapping.

This was a very difficult project for me. It really pushed my limits as to what I am capable of, and I really discovered that I am, in fact, not good at perfectly rendering things in clay form. I am okay with that. It was a challenge, and I learned that I should probably push myself harder. I also learned that I should stick to the things that I am good at and get better at them. I am also okay with that. I had a challenging object in that it was, for the most part, un-textured and smooth. It was also very difficult to get the cylinders correct. By the end, my clay shape had returned to it's original clay lump shape.

This project was very difficult for me. 2D forms of art tend to be part of my own conventions. I become very uncomfortable at the thought of completing a 3D project. My object choice became the biggest obstacle I stumbled across in this project. The shape of a door hinge is certainly simplistic enough. The measurements are very straight forward. The rust "blobs," on the other hand, turned out terribly. I was unsure how to measure and shape them correctly. It was very difficult working against the difficulty of measurement and form combined with the small scale. I eventually came to the point where I was happy with all of my pieces and began to put them all together. This was where everything began to fall apart, literally. I would put one piece on, and another would fall off. Each time this happened, I would try to reshape the piece and fix the texture of the piece. After the zillionth time of this happening, what I had worked for, and had reworked for, was eventually gone.

For my object I had a cinderblock, it was relatively hard to work with due to its size. The measurements for the block were very difficult and obscure since it was many times larger then the requirements of the clay object. So it took me a while to figure out the measurements and the ratio. carving out the block was difficult only because of digging through the clay and creating the holes. However, other then making the large deep holes shaping the rest of it was easy. After I got the general shape i played around with it for a few hours smoothing it with my hand and cutting off large edges and extra clay. Getting the texture was a task was well. To get the rough texture i took different sized rocks and rolled them over the surface of the clay.
