The Exquisite Object-Assignment

Exquisite Object - This project is loosely modeled on Surrealists’ “Exquisite Corpse.” Students will be given a starting object and three descriptive words. Students will work individually on objects during scheduled two-hour blocks, changing one “descriptive” element at a time. For example, the starting object might be a broom, with descriptive words “long, coarse, green.” Student 1 might elect to change the broom’s color from green to purple. Student 2 must select another descriptor to change; and might alter the broom handle’s length. Student 3 might choose to alter the broom’s texture by creating a fuzzy cover for the bristles, or by burning them, etc., etc. Student 4 will then have the option to change any of the new elements.
Aside from these rules, there are no material or size limitations (except that it remain within the white square).
Instructors will prepare the initial object and descriptors, and a time-sheet for students to sign up. Two hours will be allotted for each student. They need not use the whole time.
Students will photo-document their changes and post to blog by the end of the next time slot.
